Canada’s immigration system is renowned for its efficiency and focus on attracting skilled talent from across the globe. At the heart of this system is the Express Entry program, which manages applications for three major economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). A key component of this program is the Express Entry draw, a regular event that determines which candidates will be invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is one of Canada’s primary economic immigration programs. Established to select skilled workers who can integrate successfully into the Canadian labor market, the FSWP assesses candidates based on their ability to contribute economically. Since its inception, the program has undergone various changes to better align with Canada’s evolving economic needs.

Federal Skilled Trade Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a Canadian immigration program designed to attract skilled tradespeople from around the world to fill labor shortages in Canada. It is part of the Express Entry system, which manages applications for economic immigration programs. The FSTP specifically targets individuals with qualifications and experience in skilled trades.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is another key immigration program under the Express Entry system. It is tailored for individuals who have already gained skilled work experience in Canada and wish to transition to permanent residence. The CEC is particularly popular among international students and temporary foreign workers.

Provincial Nomination program

The Provincial Nominee Program allows provinces and territories in Canada to nominate individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada and are interested in settling in a specific province. PNP is a critical part of Express Entry as it provides an additional 600 CRS points to nominated candidates, significantly boosting their chances of receiving an ITA.

How does it works?

1. Express Entry Profile Creation

Interested candidates must first create an online profile and submit it to the Express Entry pool. This profile includes information about their skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other personal details

2. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score

Each candidate is assigned a CRS score based on the information provided in their profile. The CRS score is out of 1,200 points and ranks candidates against each other in the pool.

3. Invitation to Apply (ITA)

During an Express Entry draw, IRCC announces a CRS score cutoff. Candidates with scores above or equal to this cutoff receive an ITA. This means they are invited to submit a complete application for permanent residence.

Preparing for an Express Entry Draw

Improving Your CRS Score

Candidates can take several steps to improve their CRS score, such as:

  • Enhancing Language Skills: Higher scores in English or French language tests can boost CRS points.
  • Gaining More Work Experience: Additional skilled work experience can increase your score.
  • Pursuing Further Education: Higher education levels can result in more points.
  • Obtaining a Job Offer: A valid job offer from a Canadian employer can add significant points.
  • Securing a Provincial Nomination: Applying to PNPs can provide a substantial points boost.

CRS Score and Its Importance

The CRS score is a points-based system used to assess and rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. Points are awarded based on factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. The higher the CRS score, the better the chances of receiving an ITA.

The Express Entry system selects candidates for Canadian permanent residence through periodic draws called rounds of invitations by IRCC. These rounds of invitations occur approximately every 15 days and are based on CRS scores of candidates in the pool.
