Federal Skilled Trade Program
The Federal Skilled Trade Program (FSTP) is one of Canada's primary immigration pathways. It is designed for skilled tradespeople and began as part of the Express Entry program. This targets labor market shortages by attracting skilled tradespeople from around the globe. Whether you’re an electrician, a plumber, or a chef, this program could be your gateway to living and working in Canada. However, to be eligible for this program, your profile must be ranked in the Express Entry pool with a required CRS score, unlike the Federal Skilled Worker Program or other Express Entry pathways.
What eligibility criteria must I fulfil to apply under the Federal Skilled Trade Program?
To qualify, you must meet all the minimum requirements for FSTP.
Skilled Trade Occupations
To qualify for the FSTP, you must have experience in a skilled trade listed under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. These trades are divided into major groups such as
- Industrial, electrical, and construction trades
- Maintenance and equipment operation trades
- Supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture, and related production
- Processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisors and central control operators
- Chefs and cooks
- Butchers and bakers
Skilled trades work experience
You need at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount in part-time work) in a skilled trade within the five years before applying. This experience must be in the same trade you’re being nominated for.
Job offer
Applicants must have a valid job offer for full-time employment for a minimum of one year, or hold a certificate of qualification in their skilled trade issued by a Canadian federal, provincial, or territorial authority.
Language ability
Proficiency in English or French is crucial. You must meet the minimum language levels for speaking, listening, reading, and writing, demonstrated through tests like IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF. Language tests are valid for two years from the date of the result and should be valid on the day you apply for permanent residence.
Education (optional)
While there's no minimum educational requirement, having a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority can significantly boost your chances.
Proof of Funds
You must show you have enough money to support yourself and your family in Canada unless you are currently able to legally work in Canada or have a valid job offer.
